Sunday 8 November 2026: Parish Parade Mass for Remembrance Sunday.

___________________________________________

You are warmly invited to join us at St Thomas the Apostle, Hanwell, for our Parish Parade Mass at 10.00am, as we commemorate Remembrance Sunday, including the Act of Remembrance and Requiem for the Fallen.

On this solemn and meaningful occasion, we gather in prayer and thanksgiving to remember those who gave their lives in the service of others, those who continue to serve in our Armed Forces, and all whose lives have been affected by war and conflict.

As we gather for worship, our readings remind us of God’s enduring love, the hope of eternal life in Jesus Christ, and our calling to be instruments of peace and reconciliation in a troubled world.

In our first reading, from the Second Letter of St Paul to the Thessalonians, we are encouraged to stand firm in faith, trusting in God’s promise of eternal comfort and hope. These words remind us of the courage and steadfastness of those who faced extraordinary hardship and sacrifice, and of our own responsibility to remain faithful in serving others.

In St John’s Gospel, Jesus assures us: “Anyone who comes to me I will never drive away.” He promises that those entrusted to him will be raised up on the last day. As we remember the fallen, these words offer us the comfort of God’s unfailing love and the Christian hope of resurrection and eternal life.

Together, these Scriptures remind us that Remembrance Sunday is not only about honouring the sacrifices of the past, but also about renewing our commitment to peace, justice and compassion in the present.

As we celebrate the Holy Eucharist, we pray for those who have died in conflicts past and present, for those who continue to serve, for families who mourn, and for all who suffer through war and violence.

A particularly moving part of our worship will be the Act of Remembrance at our War Memorial, including the laying of wreaths, the sounding of the Last Post and the traditional two-minute silence at 11.00am. Together with our uniformed groups, we shall honour the fallen and reflect upon the responsibility of passing their memory and legacy to future generations.

Following Mass, from 11.15am to 12 noon, everyone is warmly invited to our Remembrance Sunday Cake Sale in support of the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal. Come and enjoy a delicious selection of cakes and sweet treats whilst helping to support our Armed Forces community and their families. Cash only, please.

Whether you are a regular member of our congregation, visiting for the first time, or simply wish to join us in remembrance, you will receive a very warm welcome.

We look forward to welcoming you as we come together in remembrance, prayer, thanksgiving and fellowship, honouring the sacrifices of the past whilst praying for a more peaceful future.

“At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them.”
