About Us

St Thomas the Apostle church has been serving the parish of South Hanwell for nearly 100 years. Our aim is to celebrate the love of God in Christ, through our worship, music and community life. Our style of worship is traditional with music playing an important role in our spiritual life. We see ourselves as a church for all, a place of openness and tolerance. We are also brought together by our shared pride in the building of St Thomas’, a rare masterpiece of 20th century English church architecture and a place that fosters a sense of calmness and devotion and beauty.

Welcome to St Thomas’ Church. St Thomas’ is a lovely Church which is at the spiritual heart of our community here in South Hanwell. We aim to include all ages in our services and activities from the very young with Junior Church and Thomas Tots, a youth club for our teenagers and groups for our older people. We are also here to celebrate those important milestones in life - Baptisms, weddings and funerals as well as our regular worship services.
Presently we are working on the refurbishment of our Church hall to make it into a community space available for all.

Our building

‘We realised we were in the presence of a masterpiece’ John Betjeman writing to Sir Edward Maufe, the architect, about St Thomas’ in 1974.

St Thomas the Apostle Hanwell is first and foremost about its people. But we are also proud of our building’s art and architecture. It is a Grade 2* listed church described as Edward Maufe’s finest building and is the model for Guildford cathedral. The Stations of the Cross are also an interesting feature, gifted to the church by the artist John Pelling and were blessed and inaugurated by the Rt Rev John Broadhurst, then Bishop of Fulham, in November 2002.

A comprehensive guide to the building is available for download in PDF format.
