Sunday 27 September 2026: Parish Mass for Feast of Michaelmas. (St Michael and All Angels)

___________________________________________

You are warmly invited to join us for our Parish Mass at 10.00am as we celebrate the Feast of Michaelmas, giving thanks to God for St Michael and All Angels.

As we gather for worship, our readings draw our attention to the mysterious meeting of heaven and earth, to the ministry of the angels, and above all to Christ, in whom heaven is opened to us.

In our first reading from Genesis, Jacob rests on his journey and dreams of a ladder reaching from earth to heaven, with the angels of God ascending and descending upon it. Awakening, Jacob realises that God has been present with him: “Surely the Lord is in this place—and I did not know it!” What had seemed an ordinary resting place becomes for him the house of God and the gate of heaven.

The Psalm calls upon the angels and all the heavenly hosts to praise the Lord: those who excel in strength, fulfil his commandments and do his will. Our worship joins with theirs as the whole creation gives praise to God.

In the Book of Revelation, we hear the dramatic vision of Michael and his angels fighting against the dragon. Evil is overcome and the victory belongs to God: salvation, power and the kingdom of God are proclaimed, and the faithful conquer through the blood of the Lamb and the word of their testimony.

Finally, in St John’s Gospel, Jesus speaks to Nathanael of something greater still: “You will see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man.” The image of Jacob’s ladder is taken up again, but now it is Christ himself who stands at the meeting place of heaven and earth.

Together, these Scriptures remind us that the angels do not draw our attention away from Christ, but towards him. They worship God, carry out his purposes and point us towards the kingdom of his light. At Michaelmas, we give thanks for their ministry of praise, service and protection, and join our worship with theirs before God.

Whether you are a regular member of our congregation, visiting for the first time, or simply curious to discover more about the Christian faith and the celebration of Michaelmas, you will receive a very warm welcome.

We look forward to welcoming you.
